It is in the shelter of each other that the people live - Irish proverb |
On September 11, 2002, World Peace Day was declared in numerous communities around the world, and tens of thousands of people world-wide participated in the simplest heartfelt expression of peace - a hug! And in Wollongong the 84km Peace Heart Run culminated in an attempt on the Guinness Record for the World's Biggest Hug.
The biggest congratulations to everyone who took part - Joel Penson, special guests, volunteers, schools and the Guinness Record attempt huggers - you are all champions!
Our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful volunteers who did so much throughout the day, and during the jam-packed hours around the big hug.
And to everyone who turned up, thank-you. It may have been cold on that hill overlooking the ocean, but the warm hearts of hundreds radiated peace.
And we have heard from many other people around the globe, about how they group-hugged on September 11. Thousands hugged in America, thousands in Nigeria, hundreds in the Philippines, and hundreds in many other places. If you have photos of your hugs, we would love to feature it on the website.
